In my own mind I find it hard to believe that he broke up the machine gun before he crawled away. He would have had to pick up the gun, which was a Maxim, remember, and it must have been red hot – he’d been firing for two hours. He’d have had to carry that forwards to the river and throw it in. I don’t think he’d crawl forward with the gun and then crawl back. He was out of ammunition. Whether the gun had been damaged by gunfire, I don’t know.

This was surely the case, since a survivor of the action claimed later of Dease’s machine gun section:
